How To Prepare for a Life Insurance Medical Exam

Our life insurance application usually does not require a medical exam and there is no medical exam or underwriting for policies under $2 million in coverage.

 

However, if you do need an exam, it’s to see if you have any health conditions that could impact your rate. It should take no more than 30 minutes to complete, and can actually help you get a better rate for your policy.

Preparing for this medical exam is easy.

You can choose the time, date and location (such as your home or office) for your life insurance medical examination. Once scheduled, a nurse practitioner (NP) will come to you. Here are some great tips for preparing for the life insurance medical exam.

On the day before the Life Insurance medical exam:

  • Avoid anything with alcohol or nicotine as they can raise your blood pressure.
  • Be sure to get a good night sleep.
  • Do not take any over-the-counter medications like nasal decongestants or antihistamines.
  • Stay away from foods high in cholesterol such as red meat.

On the day of the Life Insurance medical exam:

  • Do not drink any coffee, tea, soft drinks, or have any other consumables that contain caffeine.
  • Avoid any strenuous activities such as exercising as this can raise your blood pressure.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water before your exam.

Before and during the exam:

  • Wear a short sleeve top or have sleeves that can easily be rolled up. This is essential for taking your blood pressure and heart rate as well as drawing blood.
  • Be  sure to have your doctor’s contact information on hand as well as the names and dosages of any and all prescription medicines you are taking.
  • Be sure to have a government issued photo ID available for review.
  • The  NP will ask for details about your medical history.
  • The  NP will measure your weight, height, and take your blood pressure, pulse  and heart rate.
  • The  NP will collect small samples of your blood and urine.
  • You will be asked to sign and date any documents that are required for the  life insurance application.
